for next friday: w11

hello all,

I think of all you are on the right track on your books, some good work yesterday, now take the feedback and push hard. this is a very important piece so make sure you’re diligently poetic —if that’s an expression—when executing. I want to see a full dummy, cohesive content breakdown that tells a story. its all about telling a story: textually & visually.

specifically this is what i want to see:

- contact sheets: i want you to produce imagery for all your work. this serves various purposes: documenting your work, undestanding narrative sequence (storytelling), expanding meaning upon it visually (meaning: by mediating your work you also re-discover it, make it come to life in a new way, INHABIT IT) and lastly planning art direction for the “official” shoot. I want to see a pool of imagery per artwork & space. 20 images minimum per category. if this is too expensive to print then prepare pdf we can review on laptops. Chose the strongest narrative ourt of these and place in your dummy layout.

-book layout: all components in place, dummy, trimmed to scale

- cohesive storytelling (content breakdown & sequence)

- effective & flexible use of your grid

- content: TEXTUAL NARRATIVE: body copy (yes, lots of it!), heds & subheds, chapter heds, page numbers, index, bibilography, IMAGE NARRATIVE: as specified above. of course, its all about how text & image relate and create a story in sequence: rhythm, time, space.

-materials & binding: start thinking of how you want to print & bind your book, as this will relate directly to how you set up your files and also to your aesthetic & choice of inks. look at materials / methods for production as well, meaning: do you want to use a fabric hardcover? different stocks (sheets) per section? finish (matte, glossy), die cuts (laser cuts) etc. bring material samples to class. you can look for paper samples at kellypaper.com, and for more unusual stuff can visit hiromi papers in sta.monica (bergamot station), blick, pearl paint are also good.

web / indexhibit: figure out if you want your own url’s or if you’d like a collective site (on eric’s extra space). if you want your own, then start thinking of a host & domain name (i use dreamhost). look at indexhibit.com to get familiar with what is possible with it. http://www.indexhibit.org/

“how to install” and “tutorials” are a good way to begin, then the forum.

invite / poster: I want to see initial ideas for this component next friday. think of format, if you want to bundle them up into one piece or have them be separate.

below is the content that should be there: (if your invite is a self-mailer then you need to comply with postage regulations, look online for what these are as they vary according to your invite size)

invite content:

- exhibition name
- exhibition logo
- exhibition dates (exhibitions usually last about 3 months)
- opening reception time & date: Tuesday Dec 4th, 3008 / 7pm-10pm (for example)
- location / place: exhibition address
- kindly rsvp at 310.000.000 (whatever number)
- usually has a little description of what the exhibition is about—artist statement— one paragraph.
- sponsors? (can be set in type: for instance “Bla” is made possible in part through a grant form the James Irvine Foundation” etc / or include logos…although this sometimes looks crappy)

poster content:
same as above except without the opening night reception info & rsvp

any questions let me know

also, we could go for a beer after class next friday. work hard, play hard.
