W6: assignments & notes
hello all,
Hope you had a great weekend, below are some notes & specifications for what’s due next friday:
- By now your narrative should be defined, that is, your overarching concept for story, sequence and execution of artworks within their spatial context.
-It is important things don’t remain on a purely conceptual level, so I want you to make your pieces experiential and corporeal, meaning: make the assumption that what you are creating actually exists (which it does) and make it tangible, inhabitable. For instance: if you are making a sculpture create an actual 3d model and document it, play with it photographically and contextually. Pay attention to scale, lighting, materials etc. You will discover things you hadn’t thought of, easy example: by shooting something macro it opens up a whole new landscape of volumes, distances and gaps through which meaning can enter. (and meaning is a fractal / viral thing, not a stagnant totality)
or, If one of your pieces involves video then make an actual video, think of how and where it will be displayed, who are the characters (can be absract or physical) etc.
Theory IS form. Form IS concept. there is no separation; so think through form and experimentation. Shift your thoughts from your head to your entire body, only then do we achieve true intelligence, by inviting the unexpected through play, creating a synthesis between the visceral and the intellectual.
This being said: I want to see the artworks in their actual media, as “real” as a situation as possible. Accompany them with printouts that show your process, documentation. There is an additional purpose to this: You are generating imagery for your catalog, so think of every image as a sequence that brings your narrative to life.
- I want to see at least two 11 x17 sheets of imagery per artwork, you can present it as a storyboard. Why storyboard? because it illustrates sequence, rhythm and progression.
Live your work.
Specifically this is what we’ll review:
- artworks: semi-final execution and sequence of 5 point narrative (again, doesn’t mean 5 distinct concepts—we’re not going for pastiche—but rather 5 points of execution and study within one overarching narrative, exploring the above mentioned fractal nature of meaning. (for example: Johana: you can decide to explore your hair burka piece in 3 or 5 contexts: what does it mean to have that piece set on a street versus a museum? does the piece remain cohesive in form but differentiated through material? (i.e. different types, colours, textures, densities of hair etc). How does this alter perception? How would that piece be received in a muslim context and / or in a catholic context? you get the idea….
- space: semi-final rendition of space. 3D model with artworks in place.
- environmental graphics: We are now at a point where we can begin to explore language and typography as it relates to space. Typography is the organism of language, how does this organism permeate itself in your space? what is the textual narrative being told? Are you speaking In poetic statements, directional signage, both?
What do you want people to see when they get there, what information are you providing that can create a point of enry to your work? When you go to a gallery there is usually an artists statement introducing the work to the public, plus object labels (these are the ones below or next to each artwork, stating artist name, year created, material used, dimensions etc). Some ehxibitions use language itself as an artform (think of Trcey Emin or Sophie Calle or the “Pillow Book” by Peter Greenaway)
- Bring ideas for your project name executed typographically. (logos) 3 minimum. This is also a chance for you to begin determining what typefcaes you will use, how they relate to each other etc. So the more you play the easier it will be.
- Bring ideas for environmental graphics, you can present these as printed matter, done to scale so we can position them in the space and figure out what can work.
W7 is your midterm so use Friday as a jumping board to get all the feedback you need from me and your classmates. I want to see you shine and I have no doubt you are all capable of producing brilliant work (and if not I’ll make sure to push you there!)
Play, discover, imagine, the perceiver is the perceived and your work is what matters, honour it and you will honour yourself :-)
Any questions let me know
till then
carolina
